Carlisle United have confirmed that Jim Mitchell has stepped down from the club's board on health grounds.

Mitchell was the Carlisle United Official Supporters' Club representative director on the Carlisle United Association Football Club (1921) Limited board having been appointed in 2016.

He joined director of external affairs John Nixon, chief executive Nigel Clibbins and finance director Suzanne Kidd on that board.

Mitchell's appointment came as the club restructured their organisational and governance structure, and he has served on the 1921 board since.

Commenting on his decision, Mitchell said: “I have been a United fan for 70 years and I never dreamd that I would have been on the board of directors.

"I have enjoyed it very much and I am sad that I have to leave the board, but I will continue to support from the stands.”

Clibbens added: "We are sad to see Jim step down and we wish him well.

"He joined the board at a difficult time, shortly after I came to the club the club, as we set about rebuilding relations with the Trust and changing the club structure.

"Jim made a valuable contribution inside the club. He always put the club first and always voiced the interests, views and wishes of the fans strongly.

"He was challenging, critical at times, but also supportive and balanced in his approach. We wish him well for the future. ”

In a statement, CUOSC confirmed that their new representative would be Nigel Davidson, with Carol Wilson named as alternative director.

Davidson is currently CUOSC's vice chair and has been on their board for eight years. He also represents the trust at Carlisle United Supporters' Group meetings.

CUOSC chair Frank Beattie said: “I’m sure this has been an agonising decision for Jim but as we have told a number of people over the years our own health has to come first.

"Jim has been a dedicated member of the CUOSC board and the 1921 board and has worked hard for many years, bringing the concerns of supporters to both boards.

"We would like to thank Jim for the work he has done and hope that he can enjoy this well earned rest.”
