A lasting tribute to one of Carlisle United's most gifted players is taking place at another of the clubs he graced.

Stan Bowles' legendary status at Queens Park Rangers now sees the maverick player have a stand named after him at Loftus Road.

The London club this week announced that the funding target of more than Β£10,000 for the initiative has now been reached.

It follows a major initiative by supporters to see the brilliant Bowles recognised.

He starred at Brunton Park from 1971-2 before achieving legendary status over seven years with QPR.

Now the Ellerslie Road Stand has been named after the iconic player, and the words 'The Stanley Bowles Stand' have been added to the top of the stand.

Former QPR favourite Andy Sinton, who is also a member of The Forever R’s committee, said: β€œIt is fantastic to see Stan’s name taking pride of place in the stadium.

"The backing from the supporters for this initiative has been superb and seeing Stan’s name up there is really special.

β€œThere have been many great players at this club – and I was fortunate enough to call some of them my team-mates – but Stan Bowles was, in the eyes of many, the greatest of them all.

β€œThe backing from the supporters for this initiative has been superb and seeing Stan’s name up there is really special.”

The club said the funding target of Β£10,598 will also lead to an "iconic image" of Bowles, and lettering displayed on the wall inside the stand.

They praised fans and the Forever R's Club for their donations in recognition of Bowles, who is 73 and suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.
