Carlisle United beat off interest from at least two Scottish Championship clubs to the signing of Owen Moxon, it has emerged.

The Annan Athletic midfielder last week agreed a two-year deal with his home-city side at Brunton Park.

Moxon, 24, had come in for attention after his starring performances for Peter Murphy's Galabank outfit in Scottish League Two.

Championship outfit Queen of the South have admitted they were tracking the Cumbrian player - and were unlikely to be the only ones.

Speaking in the Daily Record, Queens boss Wullie Gibson said of Moxon: "I watched him in their play-off final against Edinburgh City last Friday at Galabank and I imagine that is why Ian McCall from Partick Thistle was there too."

The Doonhamers were relegated from Scotland's second tier last season while Patrick finished fourth.

Gibson conceded Moxon was "heading for bigger things".

The midfielder had been on Carlisle's academy books until 16 before being released.

After a spell with Queen of the South, he impressed during a five-year spell at Annan under Murphy.

Carlisle are understood to have been tracking Moxon early into Paul Simpson's reign and the Blues made their move last week.
