Paul Simpson says some of the big contract decisions he makes today may surprise some people - but they will be for the good of Carlisle United.

The Blues boss will meet each member of his squad today.

While some already know their fate, all United's players will see Simpson today with meetings starting at 9.30am.

A number of players are likely to be released as the manager begins the task of reshaping the squad that finished 20th in League Two.

The Blues boss said some of his calls may surprise some fans but pledged that every decision will be made for the right long-term reasons.

“I’ve already spoken to a few and made those calls early,” he said

“These decisions are made to try and make the football club better. That’s the only reason I’m doing it.

“I’ve got no personal vendetta against anybody. The decisions are made that I hope will be better for the football club, to make us stronger, better, more successful for the next few years not just for the first six months.”

Simpson confirmed that he was planning to offer some new contracts – although one such player had been “tapped up” by another club, he said on Saturday.

The player meetings take place on a day Carlisle could also confirm the arrival of a new head of recruitment.

On the squad rebuilding job, Simpson added: “We have to make sure we get a group of players together this summer who can start the season well, because I think the fans have shown what we can create if we do things properly.

“The challenge now is to get the right players in for that. We’ve got the difficult conversations to have [today] and we’ll try and make as many right decisions as we can.

“Some of what we do will surprise people, I really don’t care. I want to do the job I think will help us get stronger next season. That’s all that matters now.

“Whatever has gone before is gone, and now it’s a start of trying to build something.

“We aren’t trying to do it overnight, but we want a good start to the season and hopefully we can then keep getting stronger through the years to come.”

On decisions from players on the new deals he is preparing to offer, he added: “I’m not going to rush.

"Contract offers will be made to some players, and they’ll have a few weeks to make a decision.

“That’s a little bit annoying because you’re left in limbo, but that’s just the way it is.

“I don’t expect to make an offer and get decisions straight away.

“We have to address what’s been going on at this club for a few years now, and we have to get a proper plan in place that will take this club forward.”
