Carlisle City 4 Wetheriggs United 0: Carlisle City won the Cumberland Cup for the first time in 18 years by beating Wetheriggs in the final at Frenchfield Park.

Two first-half headers from Sam Atkinson and further goals from Jordan Holt and Kingsley Grandison were enough to seal the trophy for Jim Nichols’ side.

It saw them get their hands on the county senior cup for the first time since 2004 after a final played in front of 530 fans at Penrith AFC's ground.

The Northern League Division Two promotion-chasers took the lead early on and, despite spells of first-half pressure from their Westmorland League opponents, were good value for their victory.

City wasted no time in getting in front as Atkinson headed them into the lead after just 42 seconds.

The frontman found space to convert a Jordan Palmer corner from the right to give Nichols’ side the perfect start.

City could have had more in the opening stages with Tyler Bowman twice denied, and Jordan Irving lobbing Wetheriggs keeper Kyle Strand but seeing his shot dip narrowly wide.

Wetheriggs grew into the game with ex-Penrith frontman Martyn Coleman key to their efforts, the former Penrith striker seeing a free-kick deflected to Alex Johnson, whose shot was pushed over by City keeper Stephen Townsley.

After a heavy touch cost Palmer a breakaway goal, Coleman saw two shots blocked in quick succession before firing into the side-netting from a tight angle.

And City then doubled their lead on the half-hour mark – and again it was Atkinson with a clinical headed finish, this time the striker meeting a Palmer corner from the left to head home at the near post.

Defender Dan Kirkup was next to go close for City, heading another Palmer corner wide, before Coleman was again denied in the box by the battling City defence.

And City punished Wetheriggs a third time after just 32 seconds of the second half when Jordan Holt capitalised on an error at the back to round keeper Strand and fire home.

Palmer was denied a City fourth when Strand saved his free-kick, before Irving headed against the crossbar from close range – and then Strand made a superb save to turn another Irving finish against the woodwork as Nichols' side pushed for more goals.

Wetheriggs’ Andy Murray-Jones was sent off, receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Kirkup, before both sub Tom Turner and Coleman were narrowly denied a late consolation for the Penrith outfit.

Atkinson was denied his hat-trick when Strand saved his backheeled attempt, before sub Grandison tapped in a fourth as City - for whom Irving was named man of the match - celebrated their triumph.
