Paul Simpson says nobody in the Carlisle United squad can complain about a lack of chances as the season’s final games approach.

Simmo says he has been able to assess everyone in his squad ahead of some major looming decisions at Brunton Park.

Carlisle are preparing for their last home game of the season against Stevenage this weekend.

That comes ahead of the final afternoon at Bradford City the following weekend.

Simpson is expecting significant improvement this Saturday after last weekend’s dire showing at Harrogate Town.

He said that performance could leave no player with the right to say he deserved more opportunities.

“I’m not sure they can get any worse than they were [on Saturday] – there has to be some sort of improvement,” Simpson said.

“We’ll see how they are this week.

“They can’t be wholesale changes for the next two games because this is the group that we’ve got.

“I think I’m probably right in saying everybody’s had an opportunity, so there’s nobody sitting in the wings who can be thinking, ‘Well, I haven’t played’.

“We’ve got to get the right team together to go out next week at home to go and perform.”

Much of the focus now is on talks between Simpson and United directors over his possible future in the hotseat.

The manager said there would be more discussions this week in the hope an agreement can be reached for him to remain in charge.

Simpson has set out his belief that an “overhaul” is needed at Carlisle and says he has presented his plans to the hierarchy.

But he also says the short-term matter of finishing the season on a positive note is important.

“We’ve got to go again and this is the group that’s going to see these two games out, so they have to be better,” the Cumbrian added.

“I don’t want us to finish with a whimper, and we have a duty to do the Stevenage game right, mostly for our supporters.”

Simpson steered United to safety in the space of 12 games, with Oldham Athletic joining Scunthorpe United in relegation to the National League.

It came in a season when Carlisle have spent much of the campaign at the wrong end of League Two.

“That could so easily have been us and thankfully it’s not,” Simpson said of Oldham.

“We now have to go and be professional, we have to do both games right.

“That’s the only thing on my mind now.”
