Oldham Athletic's relegation from League Two was confirmed on a day of drama and controversy.

The Latics' game against Salford City was held up in the second half by a pitch invasion of angry home fans.

It was later completed behind closed doors as Oldham, under ex-Carlisle United manager John Sheridan, went down to the 2-1 defeat that sealed their fate.

The result confirmed their demise on a day Barrow and Stevenage both secured victories to seal their safety.

Oldham became the first former Premier League club to drop into non-league after their loss this afternoon.

Matt Smith gave Salford the lead and then, after Davis Keillor-Dunn's equalising penalty, Brandon Thomas Asante's Salford second pushed Oldham to the trap door.

The game was then halted when, with 14 minutes to go, scores of Oldham fans invaded the Boundary Park pitch to protest against unpopular owner Abdallah Lemsagam.

As the pitch was cleared, the game was initially thought to have been abandoned - only to be completed out of the gaze of fans.

An EFL spokesperson said: “This afternoon’s Sky Bet League Two fixture between Oldham Athletic and Salford City has been concluded behind closed doors.

"“The remaining 14 minutes played resulted in a final scoreline of Oldham Athletic 1 Salford City 2 and as a result Oldham Athletic have been relegated from League Two.

“Despite the earlier announcement of the abandonment of the fixture, after discussions with both clubs, match officials, and stadium security it was agreed the match could be concluded today.

"The decision was taken in order to maintain the integrity of the competition given the importance of the fixture at both ends of the League Two table.”

Sheridan did not face the media after the game with his sixth spell in charge, which initially gave Oldham the chance of survival, ultimately unable to fend off relegation.

Ex-Carlisle players Hallam Hope and Nicky Adams were both in the Oldham team.

There were celebrations at Barrow, meanwhile, as they beat promotion-chasing Sutton United 1-0 to book a third season of EFL football.

John Rooney's second-half goal was enough to complete the survival job for United's fellow Cumbrians under new boss Phil Brown, with Josh Kay sent off amid the post-goal celebrations.

Seven points from their last three games have proved enough for the Holker Street club.

Stevenage are also safe after their 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers thanks to two goals from Luke Norris.

At the other end of the table, leaders Forest Green Rovers secured promotion with a 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers.

Exeter, after beating Rochdale 2-0 through Timothee Dieng and Matt Jay goals, will follow them up if they beat Barrow on Tuesday night.
