Veteran Cumbrian goalkeeper Scott Carson was involved in the heated tunnel confrontation as Manchester City and Atletico Madrid players clashed.

Carson, who was a substitute for the Champions League quarter-final tie, appeared to offer angry home player Sime Vrsaljko to meet him further down the tunnel in post-match scenes captured on film.

The 36-year-old from Cleator Moor is seen gesturing to the Atletico defender and pointing up the stairs whilst staring at the Croatian.

Carson's involvement was spotted by City fans, who described the Cumbrian's actions as "a highlight of the night".

It came as Vrsaljko lost his temper as the two teams clashed following the game at the Wanda Metropolitano, which saw City go through after a 0-0 draw and 1-0 aggregate victory.

There were angry confrontations involving other players, with Stefan Savic and Vrsaljko targeting City's Jack Grealish.

Atletico man Felipe had also been sent off late in the game for an ugly challenge on City's Phil Foden.

At the end of the tie, police were spotted heading into the tunnel as things grew further heated.

Vrsaljko, meanwhile, had to be restrained by team-mates as City players, including Carson - on the left of the footage below - gestured to him.

City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking after the game, said he had "nothing to say" about the tunnel brawl.

Carson was an unused substitute in the tie along with striker Liam Delap, son of former Carlisle United star Rory.
