Carlisle United and Tranmere Rovers have been charged by the Football Association over the ugly scenes in last weekend's 2-2 draw.

Both clubs have been accused of breaching FA Rule E20.1 over the melee that broke out following the sending-off of home defender Calum MacDonald.

A host of players and staff were involved in the bust-up, which led to six further yellow cards.

Now United and their opponents have been charged with failing to control their players in the 41st-minute incident at Prenton Park.

They have until next Monday to respond to the charge.

The decision was confirmed by the FA today.

The governing body said in a statement: "Tranmere Rovers FC and Carlisle United FC have been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 following their EFL League Two fixture on Saturday, April 2, 2022.

"It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or technical area occupants conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour during the 41st minute of the fixture.

"Both clubs have until Monday, April 11, 2022 to provide their respective responses."

The stormy scenes followed the decision by referee Charles Breakspear to dismiss MacDonald for a challenge on United defender Kelvin Mellor.

United, who are formulating their response, said they had no comment on the charge at this stage.
