Jarrad Branthwaite was handed his second Premier League start of the season for Everton at Burnley.

The young Cumbrian's outing was his fourth top-flight start for the Toffees.

Manager Frank Lampard called up the 19-year-old to his starting XI for the crucial clash at Turf Moor.

But it proved another bad night for Lampard's side as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to remain deep in relegation trouble.

Former Carlisle United prospect Branthwaite, from Wigton, came into the side with Michael Keane missing the game through suspension.

It was the promising teenager's first start in the top flight since December's game at Chelsea, when he scored his first Premier League goal.

Branthwaite made a crucial block in the first half as Everton responded to Nathan Collins' early opener to lead through two Richarlison penalties.

But Sean Dyche's hosts turned things around in the second half thanks to goals from Jay Rodriguez and Maxwel Cornet.

England Under-20 international Branthwaite, who was playing in front of Everton's ex-Carlisle loan keeper Jordan Pickford, came into the XI at a time Lampard's side were desperate for a result against one of their closest rivals in the survival battle.

It was the Cumbrian's sixth outing of the season in all competitions and his 11th first-team appearance in total for the Goodison Park club.

Branthwaite moved to Everton from Carlisle in the January 2020 transfer window.

Their defeat at Turf Moor saw third-bottom Burnley move to within a point of Lampard's fourth-bottom strugglers.

Lampard said: "At 2-1 we should win the game. We weren't clinical enough and we made mistakes for their goals."
