Paul Simpson says Carlisle United don’t need to worry about their rivals’ results as long as the Blues keep performing.

The Cumbrians have given their survival hopes a major boost with three straight wins.

They are now six points above the relegation zone having landed a blow on second-bottom Oldham with Saturday’s 2-1 win at Boundary Park.

Manager Simpson said he was not fixating on the table and said the focus must simply be on the Blues keeping their standards high.

“I know we’ve got three points more so [the table] must look healthier than it did before the game,” he said.

“We’ve just got to keep going. I’ll be honest, I haven’t even looked at any other results because it’s just about us.

“If we do our jobs properly – and we have the teams who are competing with us at the bottom of the table to play – and if we do it right we’ll be fine, it’s as simple as that.

“There must be a bit of a gap, we know for a fact there’s a six-point gap between us and Oldham, so we’ve just got to make sure we’re at least the third-bottom team in the league, it’s as simple as that.

“The more times we perform like that the better the league table will look.”

Simpson extended his 100 per cent start since returning to Brunton Park with yesterday’s dramatic victory over John Sheridan’s side.

It also ended Oldham’s seven-game unbeaten run since Sheridan returned for a sixth spell at the Latics helm.

Simpson, though, played down the idea of landing a psychological blow on their opponents.

He said: “I don’t think it matters who it’s against, it’s just about getting results.

“Unfortunately for Oldham they were the next ones we’ve gone and done it against.

“I think John Sheridan’s got a real fighting spirit amongst them, you can see they’ve got a threat with people like Sam Hart, with Nicky Adams and the quality he puts in, Hallam Hope is a willing runner…but I thought we dealt with a lot of things really well.

“I was slightly more happy with our football that we played, and this week’s a week we can have two or three days of getting them used to playing football and building and feeling more comfortable.

“And hopefully the results will make them feel more comfortable as well.”
