Carlisle United defender Joel Senior says he has undergone successful knee surgery as he continues on the long road to recovery.

The full-back posted a message from his hospital bed after the operation on Tuesday.

January signing Senior said the procedure was a success and, though it was a "tough day", he said he was boosted by news of United's 2-0 win over Rochdale.

The former Burnley and Altrincham player suffered the injury in his fifth Carlisle appearance against Salford City last month.

The luckless defender is unlikely to figure again for United this season but he pledge to work "harder than ever" on his comeback bid.

Writing on Twitter, Senior said: "Surgery was successful. A really tough day yesterday but got through it thanks to the people closest to me and made even better by seeing the boys get three points!

"Time to work harder than ever to get back on the pitch, it starts now."

Senior joined Carlisle in the January transfer window for an undisclosed fee after impressing for National League side Altrincham.

Having signed an 18-month deal, he made his debut from the bench in the Papa John's Trophy defeat at Harrogate Town and made league appearances against Hartlepool United, Forest Green Rovers, Sutton United and Salford.
