Carlisle United co-owner John Nixon had one of the best seats in the house at the Carabao Cup final.

The Blues director was at Wembley to see Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to claim the trophy.

Nixon, an EFL director, was sat with fellow league officials as Liverpool players and manager Jurgen Klopp lifted the cup.

The League Cup final was the latest EFL outing for the Carlisle co-owner - and came a day after his own club had also won in London, beating Leyton Orient 1-0 in Paul Simpson's first game in charge.the League Two game at the Breyer Group Stadium.

Nixon has for several years been on the Football League's board as League Two clubs' representative.

He was also, until recently, chairman of the EFL Trust before stepping down after ten years.

Former managing director Nixon's involvement in a number of EFL and Football Association positions over the years has been criticised by some Blues fans amid his own club's decline over recent years.

The Blues are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Rochdale in Simpson's first home game back in charge.

It follows last week's decision by the United Holdings board - on which Nixon sits - to "change the structure" of relegation-threatened Carlisle's footballing set-up.

That saw the departures of manager Keith Millen and director of football David Holdsworth, before former double promotion-winner Simpson's popular appointment as boss until the end of the season.

Liverpool won the Carabao Cup final 11-10 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
