Cumbrian Premier League prospect Joe White received glowing praise for his display in his Football League debut.

The teenage Newcastle United midfielder, from Carlisle, went into the Hartlepool United side for their game against Barrow in midweek.

And 19-year-old White caught the eye as he helped Pools come from behind to win 3-1.

It has been a big few days in the emerging career of the young Cumbrian, whose first-team debut came last Saturday in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace.

Hartlepool manager Graeme Lee said of his Tuesday night display: “Joe White’s performance, especially in the first half…

“In the second half he did a job defensively, and tired a bit towards the end.

“But his range of passing – that’s why we’ve brought people like Joe in.”

White’s pass set up Lee Molyneux for a goal while Lee praised the teenager’s distribution in other ways.

“One switch of play – it wasn’t passing to someone’s feet, it was like, ‘Go on, run…’ He put it into space and made them run," Lee added in his post-match press conference.

“That weight of pass, it’s opening up defences. That’s what we’re trying to improve.”

Other Premier League Cumbrians had mixed fortunes on their latest outings.

Jarrad Branthwaite was handed his second Premier League appearance of the season for Everton against Newcastle United on Tuesday.

It was the 19-year-old Wigton star’s first Toffees outing under new boss Frank Lampard.

But it proved a tough return to the first team for the former Carlisle United prospect.

He came off the bench in the 35th minute after an injury to Yerry Mina.

Everton went on to take the lead through a Jamaal Lascelles own-goal but Newcastle hit back to win 3-1 through a Mason Holgate own goal and strikes by Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier.

Injuries to Mina and Ben Godfrey could give Branthwaite a further opportunity when Everton face Leeds in the top-flight this weekend.

In League One, Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford enjoyed another successful night in his bright start to life with Bolton Wanderers.

The Manchester City loan keeper, from Greysouthen, helped Ian Evatt’s side to a 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic.

It was a fifth win in six games since 19-year-old Trafford joined the club on loan last month, and he has conceded just twice in that time.

Manager Evatt has saluted the teenager's start with the club, telling the Bolton News: "His attitude and character has been first-class since he came into the building and we are really pleased with him."
