Dean Henderson made his first Manchester United appearance for two months - but was unable to prevent the Red Devils suffering FA Cup humiliation.

The Cumbrian goalkeeper was handed a start by Ralf Rangnick in the fourth round tie against Middlesbrough at Old Trafford.

But Man Utd were dumped out of the competition 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Neither Whitehaven keeper Henderson nor Boro counterpart Joe Lumley saved a spot-kick, with the tie decide by Anthony Elanga's miss for the home side.

The former Carlisle United academy player was making only his third outing of a campaign where he has been forced to play second fiddle to David de Gea.

His side took the lead through Jadon Sancho before Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty.

Chris Wilder's side then controversially levelled through Matt Crooks after Duncan Watmore appeared to handle the ball in the build-up.

The game remained locked at 1-1 through extra-time with Wilder's Championship outfit winning in the shoot-out marathon.

"We gave away too many chances, especially in the first half," United interim manager Rangnick said.

"And, in the end, if it's on penalties it's also a question of luck and in the end we lost that game and we are all incredibly disappointed."

Visiting bsos Wilder said: "The FA Cup's alive and kicking, especially in Middlesbrough tonight."

Henderson had not featured for the first-team since a Champions League game against Young Boys in December.

His only other outing came in August against West Ham United Villa in the Carabao Cup.

Henderson had been linked with January moves to clubs including Newcastle United, Watford and Ajax, but remained at Old Trafford.
