Zach Clough has completed a move to Australian side Adelaide United after his exit from Carlisle United.

The 26-year-old has headed Down Under for the next stage of his career.

Clough left United on a free transfer on deadline day with a view to sealing an overseas move.

And the forward's switch to South Australia has now been confirmed five days later by Adelaide, who sit fourth in the Isuzu UTE A-League.

Clough, who has joined until the end of the season, said: “I’m really excited about the opportunity to play in Australia.

“I’ve heard great things about the A-League and I’m really looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting to work.

“I’m a creative midfielder that loves to get forward and score goals and provide assists which will hopefully help contribute to team success.”

Head coach Carl Veart added: “We’re thrilled to have been able to add another quality player to our squad.

“Zach has great pedigree, playing at a strong level in England, and his signature gives us another attacking option.”

Former Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest man Clough joined the Cumbrians last summer, making 23 appearances and scoring three goals in an injury-hit season.

Blues manager Keith Millen said he had been surprised at Clough's request to leave, and that he would have been happy for the player to remain and fight for his place.

“I could see he wanted to do it. I don’t want to stand in anyone’s way," the United boss added.
