Former Carlisle United striker Sam Cosgrove has made a League One move on transfer deadline day.

Birmingham City's ex-Blues frontman has ended his loan with Shrewsbury Town in order to join third-tier rivals AFC Wimbledon.

Cosgrove has headed south on a half-season loan to try and help the fifth-bottom Dons pull away from relegation trouble.

he replaces Ollie Palmer, who recently joined National League big spenders Wrexham for £300,000.

Manager Mark Robinson said: "I had a list of forwards given to me by our recruitment panel when we knew Ollie was going and Sam was top of that list with one other.

"I’m really, really pleased we got him. I can’t wait to start working with him.”

Cosgrove was with United in the 2017/18 season and, shortly after breaking into Keith Curle's Blues side, was snapped up by Aberdeen.

His impressive goalscoring for the Scottish side earned him a big-money move to Birmingham which benefited Carlisle through a sell-on clause.

But his time at St Andrews has been less successful, while Cosgrove scored jsut two goals in 22 appearances in a loan spell at 16th-placed Shrewsbury this season.

He told the Wimbledon website: "I woke up this morning in my flat in Birmingham and I didn’t know where I was going to be come 6pm!

"Thankfully we got it over the line and I’m a Wimbledon player for the rest of the season. I first heard the club were interested in me a couple of days ago. Straight away it was something that appealed to me."
