Carlsle United loanee Taylor Charters received glowing praise from Gateshead's manager after his debut.

The Cumbrian went straight into the National League North club's side for their trip to Hereford.

And 20-year-old midfielder Charters helped Mike Williamson's side to a 2-0 win.

Charters played the first 71 minutes in a victory where ex-Blues frontman Cedwyn Scott was among the goals.

Player-boss Williamson later said he had decided to throw Charters straight into the XI rather than play himself.

And he was full of admiration for the way the Maryport mifielder acquitted himself.

"I thought he was excellent," said Williamson on the club's YouTube channel.

"Being honest, it was a bit of a decision whether to play myself or stick him straight in.

"We collectively made the decision to put him in, and he reflected that [decision] in terms of our blueprint and identity.

"We had a lot of references on that, and he was excellent.

"It says a lot about a young lad who can come into a team like ourselves that demand such high standards and intensity, and keep up with the pace.

"He was brilliant. I'm delighted for him."

Charters, who has joined for an initial month's loan, could feature again on Tuesday when second-placed Heed host AFC Telford.

Elsewhere, there was a good day for another young Cumbrian in League One.

Goalkeeper James Trafford enjoyed a successful debut for Bolton Wanderers after joining the Trotters on a half-season loan.

The 19-year-old Manchester City prospect, from Greysouthen, kept a clean sheet as Ian Evatt's side beat Ipswich Town 2-0.

Manager Evatt said he was delighted with the former Carlisle academy keeper's first outing.

"James is 19 and to step into a pressure game and a good quality game with a big crowd, I thought he was excellent," the Bolton boss said.

"Everything he did was really solid."
