They are scenes that have been all too rare in this Carlisle United season - players wearing beaming smiles amid a Blues victory.

It may only have been the Papa John's Trophy, but it was still highly refreshing to see United in happy spirits after a much-needed good performance and win.

Jordan Gibson and Kelvin Mellor were the goalscorers as Keith Millen's side won 2-0 at Morecambe.

It came in the new manager's third game in charge as Carlisle topped their group.

Photographer Barbara Abbott was at the Mazuma Stadium to capture the action for the News & Star.

Millen made seven changes, pairing Corey Whelan with Danny Devine in the centre of midfield, and they responded with an effective display.

Manasse Mampala was among the others given a chance by the United boss.

Young Cumbrian Taylor Charters, meanwhile, was fielded at left-back while Morgan Feeney partnered Jonathan Dinzeyi at centre-half.

United grew into the game as the first half went on, Brad Young leading the line alongside Tristan Abrahams, but things remained 0-0 at half-time.

But the arrival of Jordan Gibson saw United quickly ahead in the second half - the sub scoring impressively with a free-kick.

It was the August signing's second goal in a United shirt, and he and his team-mates relished the moment.

A good night, then, for this man - who has plenty to think about ahead of Saturday's big all-Cumbrian league clash with Barrow at Brunton Park.
