Gavin Skelton believes debutant keeper Mark Howard’s experience will benefit Carlisle United.

The 35-year-old went straight into the side for Saturday’s defeat to Tranmere.

Howard saved a penalty from Kieron Morris on his first Blues outing.

That wasn’t enough to avert defeat as struggling United went second bottom of League Two.

But caretaker manager Skelton feels ex-Scunthorpe man Howard can prove a worthwhile addition for United.

“I’m happy [with his debut] – and he’s an influence on the dressing room,” Skelton said.

“It was very harsh on Lukas Jensen. He’s a good keeper who’ll have a good career.

“We’ll have a look at that for the next few games but he has a presence about him which can help the back four.

“[Picking him] was just a case of bringing that experienced core to the team – that talking.

“Before the game he was talking to the lads, shouting, and you could hear that during the game. No reflection on Lukas, he’s disappointed, but it’s just bringing that experienced keeper and voice in.

“He’s come into the dressing room and has a confidence and presence about him, which perhaps we need to add to the team.”

Howard joined to cover the absence to Magnus Norman, who is sidelined for a spell with injury.

The new signing is likely to continue in the side at Newport on Tuesday night.

Skelton, meanwhile, says United remain on the lookout for other potential signings after the free agent arrival of Howard.

Asked if Carlisle are actively seeking further help, such as in attack, he said: “I think you’re always looking, as we’ve shown with the goalkeeper. We’re obviously looking.”

Kelvin Mellor was again out of the squad on Saturday as he continues his return from injury.

“He trained [on Friday] and did a little bit with the physio,” Skelton said.
