Managerless Carlisle United's troubles continued as a fourth straight defeat without scoring sent them second bottom of League Two.

Rod McDonald's own-goal consigned them to a 1-0 home defeat against Tranmere under caretaker boss Gavin Skelton as controversial ex-owner Michael Knighton watched from the directors' seats.

Fans gave us their views on Twitter afterwards.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a squad as toothless at this one. I can’t see where the next goal is coming from, never mind the next point. The worst selection of attacking options I think we’ve ever had. (@RyanWood85)

The football was no different today under Skelton, I would not have known Beech had gone … (@cufc_andy17)

Absolutely awful. Players walking around, long ball dross, no cohesion or passion. Scared to shoot. Similar sized clubs but a million miles behind Tranmere. Embarrassing. (@scholes_peter)

We are screaming out for a centre-forward, four balls put into the box first half, any half-decent centre-forward would have banged one or two into the net. We also need an experienced centre-backs - it's not rocket science, EVERYONE can see it. Yet Holdsworth, Jenkins, Day (or his apparatchiks) do sweet FA. (@BruceVander)

Unlucky to go down to OG defeat. First half especially played some good football. Brill pen save by our keeper followed up by another save but why for goodness sake bring Abrahams on instead of Young? Wouldn't have even let Knighton in ground let alone in directors box (@ericgreen866)

Can't buy a win or even score a goal at the moment! (states the bleedin' obvious). The quality in midfield is evaporating as there's no forwards capable of receiving and threatening on goal. Howard saved his own baptism of fire by saving that penalty! Looks a good addition. (@LindaNi121202)

I didn't see anything that makes me think we can climb out of relegation spot. So I guess the rest of the season I'll be hoping there are at least two teams worse than us. (@topsandollie)

The owners are killing the club. Beech was destined to fail with this squad as would any manager. The ownership is the issue. If we go down we are finished. There's dozens of National League clubs with more money than us. We will continue to sink like a stone with the custodians. (@martyn_haworth)

A blind man on a galloping horse can see that the club is going nowhere fast under the current ownership. It's a shamble of a ship and it's sinking fast. (@bukseda)

No manager, no points, no goals.... It's a recurring theme week in week out at the minute. The reluctant custodians need to relinquish their hold on the club before we we do the same with our league status! We are going backwards not forwards - we need some of those too!! (@cumbrianbluess)

Very hard to watch, very hard to see a way out. Just when things couldn’t get any worse I turn my head left from my seat in B Stand to see Knighton in the directors box. Absolutely gut wrenching. Very upset tonight, absolutely no respect for anybody. (@gordon_matty)

Can I get a refund on my season ticket? (@j_michaelb)

Gutted. You’ve got fans welcoming MK back like he’s a hero, the owners of the club rolling out the red carpet for him…on the pitch is going from bad to worse. (@ScottBeeby1)

Crying out for a No9. No fight after they scored and criminal that no-one broke out of a jog for the last 20 minutes. That said we got nothing from the ref and every loose ball fell to a yellow shirt. I guess that’s what happens when the chips are down. (@GraemeMoore4)

A bleak display. I have supported Carlisle for many years and have seen some struggling teams but rarely can I remember such lifeless, soulless stuff. There was no pride in representing the club demonstrated by anyone today, on or off the field. (@ridley_richard)

The entire squad is being like for like steadily downgraded on quality and obviously wages, worrying times. The board seems to be untouchable on anything regarding the what goes on and everything is blamed on the manager. Can’t be a healthy environment to work in. (@Ligger000)

Just toothless, I thought Clough looked better in the first half but had little to work with. Couldn't fault a lot of the effort but for what ever reason there is a distinct lack of quality, even players like Guy who we know can produce are just way off it (@phleaslittle)

My views are not suitable for print or polite company I'm afraid. (@norraist)

A point proven that it wasn’t all beech’s fault. Another point proven that Skelton is part of the problem too. Abrahams has to be the worst “striker” And I’m simply working 6 days a week to put money into the pockets of those who simply do not care about the club. (@djtooley247)

Tranmere were the much better team although I thought we created a few good chances. At times the defending was shocking and up front we are short of a big forward who can hold the ball up and lay it off. Can't see where a goal is coming from. We may need a miracle to keep us up. (@peterjo91525330)

Skelton's selection and subs were as random as Beech. Need someone to come in and give us a clear identity and playing style. Jenkins, please leave the club as soon as possible. (@ticketaddict)

Anyone who puts pepper on chips needs getting rid of regardless of anything else. (@tashkentterror)

Get Keith Hill in now and let him bring in his own No2 with him (@GeoffRobbo42)

The club's dying. (@AdWhitfield94)
