Surprise new names have emerged in the betting for Carlisle United's next manager.

Former Tottenham Hotspur interim boss Ryan Mason has seen his odds reduced to 6/1 with Sky Bet.

The 30-year-old Mason is now third favourite behind John McGreal and caretaker Gavin Skelton, who takes charge of the team against Tranmere today.

Mason's managerial experience is limited to a brief period towards the end of last season when he took the Spurs helm following Jose Mourinho's sacking.

He previously held academy coaching positions at the Premier League club, having retired in 2018 after suffering a fractured skull in a game against Chelsea the previous year.

United have said they will not be rushing an appointment.

Director of football David Holdsworth this week said he had a candidate in mind who "has managed at a higher level, has a really good way of motivating, making players believe, and can take this club forward."

He also said some potential candidates were based in the south.

But he stressed the final decision would be taken by the board after a shortlist and interview process.

Another new name mentioned north of the border today is Livingston assistant manager Marvin Bartley.

The 35-year-old is described by The Scotsman as "the frontrunner" for the Blues job and that he has "reportedly moved up the pecking order" to replace Chris Beech.

Bartley has not yet appeared in the betting, though ex-Hearts and Dundee United boss Czaba Laszlo is now 16/1.

Ex-Colchester and Swindon boss McGreal is 4/7 with Sky Bet with Skelton 5/1.

Paul Tisdale is 10/1, Danny Grainger 12/1 while ex-United boss Neil McDonald has entered the market at 18/1.

McGreal and Skelton are 2/1 joint favourites with BetVictor, meanwhile.
