A former Carlisle United frontman will face the Blues next season in the colours of the EFL's newest club.

Sutton United have handed a deal to Richie Bennett after his departure from Stockport.

The big frontman, who played for the Blues from 2017-19, jois the south London club's strikeforce for their first season in the Football League.

Matt Gray, manager of last season's National League champions, said he was pleased to snap up the former £50,000 Carlisle signing.

”He’s a player I’ve been aware of for a while and he caused us problems when he came on in both games against us for Stockport last season," said Gray on Sutton's website.

"He’s got good experience and character and will be a great addition to the squad on and off the pitch.”

Bennett spent time on loan with Hartlepool last season before agreeing to terminate his Stockport deal.

The 30-year-old former Barrow player hit 12 goals in 73 United appearances after being signed by Keith Curle in the summer of 2017.

United's first ever league meeting with Sutton is on September 25 at Gander Green Lane, with Sutton visiting Brunton Park for the first time on January 29.

Another ex-United man has found a new club with released Port Vale defender Shaun Brisley heading to Wrexham in the National League.

He has signed a two-year deal under new boss Phil Parkinson - at the club owned by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Brisley said: "Once I met with the manager, and he explained the really exciting project here, I couldn’t wait to join.

“Wrexham are a big club who don’t deserve to be where they are now. With the new owners and the project in front of them, I want to play my part in getting us back to the Football League."
