The goalkeeper who has replaced Dean Henderson in England's Euro 2020 squad has praised the Cumbrian for his "fantastic" good luck message.

Sheffield United's Aaron Ramsdale has stepped up after Henderson was forced to pull out with a hip injury.

Whitehaven star Henderson admitted he was "devastated" to have to withdraw from his first major international tournament.

But Ramsdale said the Manchester United man set his disappointment to one side when he took the time to wish him well.

Speaking on the official England podcast, Ramsdale said of his call-up: "It's tinged a little bit because I am devastated for Dean.

"The goalkeeper's union is strong and for him to have this opportunity taken away from him is devastating for him.

"I have had mixed emotions, really. Obviously on my side I have been over the moon, but seeing Dean earlier on, he's been fantastic, saying, 'It's [your] time now' and that I can go and help the team.

"I can't speak highly enough of Dean."

Ramsdale said it felt "surreal" to have joined Gareth Southgate's squad ahead of Friday night's group clash with Scotland.

Ex-Carlisle United academy keeper Henderson, 24, is returning to Old Trafford for further assessment on his injury.

The Manchester Evening News have reported that Henderson has suffered a glute tear which should keep him out for two to three weeks.

They claim Henderson should be fit for pre-season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.
