Supporters went for a power-packed effort as Carlisle United's goal of the season for 2020/21.

Jon Mellish's 18-yard thunderbolt against Newport got the fans' vote.

But how does the midfielder's impressive strike compare with past goals of the season at Brunton Park?

Treat yourself to footage of some of the best from recent years - all handily available via YouTube.

2018/19 - Hallam Hope v Notts County

A viral classic, and surely a unique goal in Blues history.

You've probably seen it a million times by now - but what's one more viewing?

Just how did he manage to avoid detection, as he prowled on the goalline for what felt like ages, before suddenly springing forward, ambushing Notts keeper Ryan Schofield and slotting the ball into the empty net?

A work of calculated genius.

2017/18 - Shaun Miller v Barnet

Hope's was sneaky. This one was just plain spectacular.

If all Route One goals were this good, the tactic would have a much better reputation.

Shamal George, the on-loan goalkeeper, sends it forward. Miller, with his back to goal, cushions its fall.

The rest: a magnificent, back-to-goal, scissoring volley, never loses its magic no matter how often you watch.

2016/17 - Luke Joyce v Crawley

Great goals are always even better when they come from an unlikely source.

Midfielder Joyce would be the first to admit he was never exactly prolific in a United shirt.

This one, though, was very much worth the wait: a pulverising shot from outside the box in a 3-1 win over Crawley.

You can hear the crowd beckoning him to shoot, and that hopeful sound turning into astonished joy as Joyce crashes the ball in off the bar.

2015/16 - Danny Grainger v Portsmouth

Another unlikely source - not so much the player, as Grainger chipped in with plenty over the years - but the fact it came from his right foot.

Just sit back and admire the sweetest strike you'll see, as the Cumbrian cuts in from the left, has a look, pulls back the old standing peg - and leaves Portsmouth's keeper a stranded spectator.

Glorious.

2014/15 - Gary Dicker v Plymouth

This superb volley, which fizzed spitefully past Plymouth keeper Luke McCormick, would have been a worthy award winner in any case.

What made it extra special was twofold. One, that it came in the League Two game which finally sealed Carlisle's survival after a tortuous season.

Two, that the scorer had spent much of the season sidelined by the Blues manager (Keith Curle), only to return to the side late in the campaign. And how.

2013/14 - Tom Lawrence v Tranmere

The 2013/14 campaign is largely remembered for the chaos of Carlisle's League One relegation.

Had this chap stuck around a bit longer, they might have had a better chance.

This was, quite simply, a virtuoso showing from Manchester United loanee Lawrence, who scored a cracking volley in the first minute.

Then, in the second half, he did this:

2012/13 - David Symington v Scunthorpe

"No words needed," writes the person who uploaded this to YouTube.

True enough. Let this extraordinary free-kick do its own talking.

2020/21 - Jon Mellish v Newport

And let's not forget this season's: one touch followed by a meaty 18-yard hit from Mellish that rips and bends out of the Newport keeper's reach. A worthy winner.
