A former Carlisle United player is set for a big role this week in trying to help his Scottish side avoid relegation.

Ex-Blues youth prospect Cameron Salkeld will be in the Greenock Morton side who face Airdrieonians in the Championship play-off final.

Salkeld, 22, got one of the crucial Morton goals that helped see off Montrose 3-1 to secure their place in the final.

The two-legged final begins with a clash at Airdrie on Tuesday night before the return game on Friday.

Salkeld is in his second year with a Morton side who finished ninth in Scotland's second tier and are hoping to avoid the drop to League One.

Airdrie came second in League One.

Salkeld came through the youth team ranks at Brunton Park to win a professional deal.

The north east native made two first-team appearances for the Cumbrians, both in the EFL Trophy.

One of those games, against Fleetwood in November 2016, saw attacking midfielder Salkeld grab his first professional goal after combining with fellow youth prospect Jordan Holt.

He was one of four youth players handed "development" contracts by the Blues the following summer, but did not enjoy further first-team opportunities.

After loan spells with Whitby and Annan, he joined Gateshead in 2018 before heading north of the border to Morton in 2019.

There is another Carlisle connection in Gus MacPherson's Morton side in the form of captain Sean McGinty.

The former Manchester United player was on loan with the Blues back in the 2012/13 season, making one appearance.
