Jon Mellish's thumping strike against Newport has been voted Carlisle United's goal of the season.

The midfielder's first of two goals against the Exiles in the Blues' 3-2 win in November got the nod from fans.

The club's official poll saw Mellish's strike get 37 per cent of the vote.

Second was Omari Patrick's long-range effort against Crawley, with Offrande Zanzala's solo goal against Southend third.

The Blues said nearly 2,000 supporters voted.

Mellish, who scored 16 goals in the 2020/21 campaign, said on United's website: "It’s a really nice way to round off the season.

"It’s always good to get a personal award for something you’ve done, but I didn’t actually think I’d get it with some of the other goals that were up for it.

“Anything that comes down to a fan vote is extra special because it means they’ve gone out of their way to pick you.

That’s who you play for because they watch you and come to the games to support you. For them to see the goal and pick it as the best one is a nice feeling, it’s nice to get the award from them."

Mellish's award-winning strike came in the 68th minute of United's Brunton Park victory against the then table-topping Exiles.

After a good run from the right by Omari Patrick, the ex-Gateshead man received the ball about 30 yards from goal and, after taking a touch, slammed the ball high past Newport keeper Nick Townsend from the edge of the box.

It was former centre-half Mellish's seventh goal during an amazing run of 12 in 14 games during the autumn.
