We are at the business end of the season now - and there's no hiding the importance of this weekend's action.

Carlisle United host an in-form Port Vale side in a bid to boost their play-off challenge.

Victory in Saturday's early kick-off could put the ninth-placed Blues into the top seven - but defeat would inflict serious damage on their hopes.

Here's our handy look at the key details of the Brunton Park clash.

TEAM NEWS

For once, it appears to be more good news than bad for United.

Boss Chris Beech has Joshua Kayode back after a month out with injury, the striker playing the closing stages of Tuesday's draw at Newport as a substitute.

Fit-again Danny Devine came into the side at right-back at the expense of George Tanner, and his composed performance in his first outing since December could get him another outing against the Valiants.

If Beech opts to tweak his side further, the likes of Nick Anderton and Gime Toure would be contenders to come in.

Others hoping for more involvement include Dean Furman, Ethan Walker, Taylor Charters and Cedwyn Scott.

Rhys Bennett, Brennan Dickenson and Morgan Feeney are still out.

Port Vale saw a departure from their squad this week, with midfielder Manny Oyeleke joining National League side Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee.

Injury-wise, Zak Mills is out for the season, while the Valiants have a number of ex-Carlisle men in their ranks.

Midfielder Luke Joyce is a regular starter, while Shaun Brisley has started their last five games in defence.

Winger David Amoo and striker Mark Cullen, both subs recently, should also be in tomorrow's squad.

Harry McKirdy was recently brought back into the Vale squad by boss Darrell Clarke, having been omitted from it by previous boss John Askey, but last season's Carlisle top scorer has not made an appearance since mid-December.

FORM

While United have certainly improved recently, their opponents are utterly resurgent.

It is five games unbeaten for Beech's side, three wins followed by two draws.

Vale, meanwhile, have won their last SIX league games, their best such run since 1996.

And if they can chalk up a seventh at Brunton Park, it will incredibly be their best winning sequence since...1893.

Darrell Clarke has inspired a significant turnaround since replacing Askey at the helm in February, with Vale climbing out of relegation trouble and into 14th place.

Their form has given them a slim play-off chance, Vale sitting nine points outside the top seven with five games to go.

Their top scorer is ex-Hartlepool man Devante Rodney with 12 goals.

Away from home they have won seven, drawn three and lost 10 - while Carlisle still boast the biggest number of home wins in the division with 12, and the most home goals (37).

If United avoid defeat it will equal this season's longest unbeaten league run.

And if Carlisle win, they will be hoping for favourable results in the games involving sixth-placed Newport, seventh-placed Forest Green and eighth-placed Exeter in order to climb into the play-off spots.

Newport host Cambridge, Forest Green are at home to Scunthorpe and Exeter host Southend.

ODDS

Carlisle have the edge for this one as far as the bookies are concerned.

They are 6/4 for the win with Sky Bet, 5/4 with Betfair and Bet Victor and 13/10 with Betway.

Vale are 23/10 with Bet 365, 2/1 with Paddy Power and 7/4 with Sky Bet.

The draw is 23/10 with SBK and 21/10 with William Hill.

Betway offer 6/1 if you fancy Offrande Zanzala to get the game's first goal.

Port Vale's first scorer odds include 33/1 (BetFred) for ex-Blues man Luke Joyce to get his first of the campaign.

KICK-OFF

Don't be late - it's a 12.30pm start at Brunton Park.

It is one of many games in the EFL to have been switched in order to avoid a clash with the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral, which is due to start at 3pm.

iFollow is the only way fans can watch the game, with matches continuing to be played behind closed doors because of Covid-19.

The News & Star will be reporting from Brunton Park and BBC Radio Cumbria will provide commentary.

REFEREE

Peter Wright is the man in the middle for this one.

He last encountered the Blues at December's 1-0 win over Mansfield at Brunton Park, booking five Carlisle players and one visiting player.

He also took charge of their 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe in September, issuing two bookings to the hosts.

Wright has awarded two penalties to Carlisle in recent years - against Rochdale in last season's League Cup, and against MK Dons the previous campaign in League Two.

He last officiated Port Vale for their goalless draw at Bradford in December, with no cards shown.

PAST MEETINGS

It was a 1-0 win for United when they went to Vale Park earlier in the season, Jon Mellish poaching the winner minutes after Paul Farman had saved a Tom Pope penalty.

Their last home encounter with the Valiants was back in August 2018, when a Danny Grainger spot-kick and a Tom Parkes header earned a 2-1 win.

Vale's last win in Cumbria came in December 2017, when Barnett and Pope secured a 2-1 victory at Brunton Park.

Another notorious win for the Burslem outfit came in September 2013, when Pope's injury-time goal claimed a 1-0 win that heralded the end of Greg Abbott's United reign.

Overall, home and away, it's been 16 wins, nine draws and 14 defeats when Carlisle have faced the Valiants over the years.

One memorable meeting came in 2006, when United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 thanks to second-half goals from Holmes, Hawley and Murphy:
