Chris Beech has welcomed Nick Anderton’s return to form for Carlisle United – after having “strong words” with the skipper.

The left-back set up a goal and scored one himself in the Blues’ defeat to Tranmere on Tuesday.

Anderton also had a hand in George Tanner’s strike at Salford last weekend for the Blues, after a tough return to the fold at Harrogate the previous time out.

Beech said the 24-year-old has come through a stop-start spell in which he missed games through Covid-19 self-isolation.

United’s enforced lay-off then held up his and the team’s return, but Anderton is back at the forefront and will lead the Blues against Oldham tomorrow.

“I was so pleased with Nick Anderton – he was another player that has had the virus and has had to get himself back playing,” Beech said.

“He didn’t play in the Bolton fixture on Boxing Day, but we’ve got to move on.

“I’ve had good, strong words with Nick and he’s responding with the right character to fit the culture that we’ve talked about.

“He’s played well against Salford and Tranmere, he’s set two goals up and scored a goal, and the way he’s reacted has been excellent.”

Beech recalled attacker Gime Toure against Tranmere, the forward also involved in Carlisle’s two goals in the 3-2 defat.

United’s boss said the Frenchman contributed to an improved attacking effort which can hopefully now translate into victories.

“I thought all of the front three were quick and elusive, and they were very good backed up by some great energy in midfield,” he said.

“To be honest with you there's a lot of work goes on in midfield that that doesn't get valued because you only generally see the pass or the cross.

“The movement off the ball is important - you'll see Jon Mellish affect both goals without touching the ball because it takes people away and affects opponents if you’re prepared to run and run like he does.”

Anderton's goal against Tranmere was his second of the season, adding to his strike against Stevenage in December.

The former Barrow, Blackpool and Accrington Stanley man has regained his left-back place after Jack Armer stepped in during Anderton's absence.
