Carlisle United will be allowed to make five substitutes in league games, starting this weekend.

The EFL last night confirmed they were increasing the number of changes a team could make during a league fixture.

It follows talks with clubs.

In Leagues One and Two, clubs will still be allowed to name up to seven subs in their matchday squad, but with five now allowed to take to the pitch rather than the usual three.

Championship clubs can name nine subs in their squad and make five changes durin a game.

There is now speculation that the Premier League, who in Augst voted to return to three changes per game, could go back to five subs, teams having been given dispensation to make that many changes after a Fifa ruling in April.

A statement from the EFL said: "Following consultation with Clubs, the EFL Board has agreed to increase the permitted number of substitutes to five in all Sky Bet EFL fixtures taking place from 12 noon on Friday 20 November for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

"Regulation 33.4 has been amended to permit:

"Championship Clubs to name up to nine substitutes in their matchday squad, with five permitted to take to the pitch in any fixture.

"League One and League Two Clubs to name up to seven substitutes in their matchday squad, again with five permitted to take to the pitch."

The new ruling does not apply to the Carabao Cup or Papa John's Trophy but United are out of both of those competitions.

The Blues remain in the FA Cup where they can make a fourth substitution if the game goes to extra-time - as they did at Hayes & Yeading.
