Joe Fryer and Junior Mondal are likely to get further chances to impress for Carlisle United – while boss Chris Beech could run the rule over more trialists.

Keeper Fryer and winger Mondal have continued to train with the squad in their bid to earn moves to Brunton Park.

They are likely to remain with the squad as United look ahead to further friendlies following the cancellation of tomorrow's game at Workington after a home player tested positive for Covid-19.

Beech is also eyeing other hopefuls as he considers further potential additions, but insisted there would not be a glut of trialists during pre-season.

Fryer has linked up with Carlisle two years after a previous loan spell from Middlesbrough, when the promising keeper suffered a broken leg.

The 24-year-old played the first hour against Fleetwood on Tuesday as he seeks a return to the first-team scene after a long spell on the sidelines.

Beech said: “He had a horrific injury and he needs to recover.

“He’s a great character, he lives in the north east and he can access Carlisle with ease.

“He’s represented himself well in the past, from what people I speak to say, and he came to the fore in his early games [here] even though he didn’t play that many times.

“It’s really unfortunate that he’s in this position because if he hadn’t been injured he probably wouldn’t be here on trial. He’d probably be playing for Middlesbrough.”

Former Forest Green man Mondal, who was also previously on Boro’s youth books, also figured at Fleetwood.

Beech added: “He’s training with us, and you’ll see two, three or four more new faces, because there are players who are looking for contracts and jobs.

“That’ll be happening a bit more at different clubs because I don’t want to get too many trialists.

“It dilutes the message and it’s been an important part of our strategy that we got the players in the building.

“I feel my difference is working with players, so having a lot of trialists and different people then coming together before the season starts isn’t something I’d be good at. It’s just not me. We’ve done it this way round but there will be two or three more.”

On the goalkeeping front, Beech is considering Fryer among other options as he seeks competition for summer signing Magnus Norman.

He said: “We’ve looked at loads. But [clubs like] Fleetwood are also looking for goalkeepers, Salford are…if you can give me more money than they’ll pay I can get another one tomorrow.

“You have to make sure you’re looking at the right ones for the right reasons. So we’ll see. It’s a question of timing, coming together [with] finance. But we do need another one.”

Beech will also use some of his younger players in United's friendlies and wants to see signs of progress from his teenagers.

He added: “It’s good to have a look at the younger players. It was pretty evident at Fleetwood that their younger players were pretty strong while ours have to catch up more.

“That’s not a criticism, it’s a fact. I’ve got to protect our club by winning games. So we have to make sure that while we look to try and encourage everybody getting on the pitch, we’ve got to make sure it’s a reason we’re heading towards.”

United, meanwhile, have tonight confirmed their next friendly will be at Gateshead next Tuesday night.

The game against Mike Williamson's National League North side will kick off at 7pm and will be played behind closed doors.

It will see a return to the International Stadium for United's former Gateshead players Jon Mellish and Joshua Kayode.
