The DSD Carlisle Half is set to be held as normal tomorrow despite the cancellation of many other sporting events.

The event, which includes a half-marathon, 10km race and 2km fun run, starts and finishes at Brunton Park. It has attracted some 1,500 entrants.

Organisers say it will be held within government guidelines concerning such events, after Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday declined to order a ban on such “mass gatherings”.

Co-organiser Ian Milburn said: “On Thursday night we were 90 per cent certain it was going to be postponed.

“But going by the Government guidelines, which we have to do, it is on.

“We spoke to the football club and, as far as they are concerned, everything is within the guidelines.”

Milburn said he and fellow organiser Mike James are continuing to set things up for the race, where participants will be advised of certain measures designed to help prevent the spread of the virus.

This includes runners being recommended to refrain from hugs, kisses, high-fives and handshakes. “It is advice to help people remain healthy and safe and we will reiterate that on the day,” Milburn added.

“As serious as the [virus] situation is, we want everyone to enjoy themselves. There is a lot of doom and gloom around but we hope this is something that will be positive.”

Entries are available on the day for all three events from 8am. The fun run starts at 8.30am with the half marathon and 10km race beginning at 10am. Details: http://www.carlislehalf.co.uk/
