Macclesfield's troubled League Two season suffered a further blow today with the resignation of boss Daryl McMahon.

The Silkmen head coach has quit this afternoon along with assistant Steve Gritt.

Reports suggest McMahon and Gritt have been frustrated by the club's financial woes, with players and staff having been paid late on several occasions.

The club were recently docked six points after admitting a number of rule breaches, including the late payment of players and failure to play a game against Crewe last month, with players striking. A further four points were suspended.

The six-point deduction took the Moss Rose club down League Two, where they currently sit third bottom, one place and five points below Carlisle United.

They drew 2-2 at Port Vale on New Year's Day. They are due to host Carlisle on March 28.

Under-fire owner Amar Alkhadi has recently claimed to be in talks to sell the club.

Macclesfield "regretfully" confirmed in a short statement that McMahon and Gritt had tendered their resignations.

"We are taking advice from our legal team in relation to this and will provide a further update as soon as possible," the club added.
