Byron Webster will return to training at Carlisle United today – but will not be allowed to head the ball.

The centre-half is being eased back into things after having to sit out the Cumbrians’ draw with Grimsby.

Webster was left dazed from a collision with team-mate Canice Carroll in the FA Cup win over Forest Green last Tuesday and FA protocols meant he had to rest from action for seven days.

That means a gradual return before he can resume full training tomorrow. “He can train on Monday but he’s not allowed to head,” said boss Chris Beech. “I think on Tuesday he’s allowed to head and train as normal.”

Webster is set to be available for United’s trip to Colchester next Saturday and Beech hopes Jon Mellish will also be able to return.

The ex-Gateshead centre-half pulled out of training on Friday having been expected to make his comeback from a dead leg.

Beech said: “He trained, did his work with Dolly [physio Neil Dalton], but he’s come in and pulled out. Things like that from a management perspective are very frustrating.

“I’d like to think he’ll be available sooner rather than later.”
