Cumbrian hammer thrower Nick Miller has earned a place in the hammer throw final at the World Athletics Championships.

Miller, from Scotby, did not make the automatic qualifying distance for the final, but the 26-year-old's second-round attempt proved enough as he finished in 10th place overall.

Having fouled with his first attempt today, Miller then landed a throw of 76.36m which was good enough for a fifth-placed finish within the first group of competitors.

Surprisingly opting against using his third-round throw, Miller then had a nervous wait to see how many competitors in the second group could surpass his throw, knowing, if eight or more did so, he would not qualify for tomorrow's final.

In the end, though, Border Harrier Miller finished 10th, with Polish pair Pawel Fajdek (79.24m) and Wojciech Nowicki (77.89m) qualifying in first and second, respectively.

Miller, who was forced to relocate away from UK Athletics’ holding camp in Dubai, instead, training in Turkey in the build-up to the championships, was considered as one of Britain's best medal hopes ahead of the championships.

Last April, on the Gold Coast, Australia, Miller secured Commonwealth Games gold in style, throwing 80.26m as he broke the Commonwealth Games record.

Tomorrow's final at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, will take place in the evening (starting at approximately 7.30pm).
