After last week’s washout, a complete programme was concluded in the Eden Valley Cricket League, albeit in conditions that tested fielders in particular.

Champions Carlisle 2nds opened their season with an easy 108-run victory over newly-promoted Wigton 2nds.

Asked to bat first, Carlisle scored (182/8) with Jordan Whinn (56), Paul Glascott (45) and Ed Mitchell (30) scoring the bulk of the runs. Josh Dixon (3/32) and George Spark (2/29) causing a late innings slide. In reply, Wigton (74/10) never threatened with Phil Frazer (4/20) the best of Carlisle’s bowlers.

What looked like a much-changed Lanercost lost at home to Caldbeck by nine wickets.

Put in, Lanercost (95/10) subsided with Lawrence Baldwin (44) and Ryan Proud (23) the only two with double figures; Matthew Strong (3/32) and Liam Bell (3/6) doing the damage. In reply, Caldbeck (96/1) raced to victory.

Scotby celebrated their return to the Premiership, defeating Threlkeld by 48 runs.

Kirkby Stephen (168/10) and Rockcliffe (136/6) played out a draw. Kirkby were in a little bother at 53/5 but the experienced Charlie Bowman (53) and Rob Hook (36) steadied the innings. Rockcliffe were in real trouble at 41/6, before Robert Wharton (34 not out) and Josh Stirling (39 not out) then stood firm with an undefeated partnership of 95.

It’s always pleasing to see a young emerging talent and, in Stirling, Rockcliffe are giving this 14-year-old the opportunity to develop.

In Division One, promoted Carleton (153/8) beat Keswick’s 2nds (92/10) by 61 runs. The other promoted side, Patterdale, (61/10) struggled at Staffield (62/2), losing by eight wickets.

Appleby (106/10) made the long trip to Langholm (107/9) and narrowly lost.

Edenhall (214/5) were asked to bat first and posted a very competitive score thanks to Johnnie Kidd (117 not out) and Tom Langridge (58). Wetheral (149/10) fell well short. Stainton (111/5) beat a young Carlisle third-team (110/10) by five wickets.

In Division Two, Caldbeck 2nds (242/9) had a winning draw with Braithwaite (184/9), Gamblesby (195/10) comfortably defeated Lanercost 2nds (109/9) and Irthing Vale (96/2) were convincing winners at Temple Sowerby 2nds (93/10).

In the Sunday League, Stainton 2nds (163/8) beat Wigton 3rds (159/8) by two wickets, Caldbeck Colts (221/6) had a losing draw against Lanercost Colts (266/4), Dumfries (154/6) played out a winning draw against Carlisle’s Academy (124/8) and Langholm 2nds (196/7) beat Keswick’s 3rds (151/10).
