Border City ABC returned from the MTK Box Cup with five gold medals and two silver.

The champions were Isaac Carrigan, Matty Lamming, Billy Davidson, Connor Moran and Ike Ogbo. The two silver medals went to Lewis Taylor and Rhys Ellis. The club entered 10 boxers in total.

The standard of boxing throughout the tournament, which was held at Penrith, was very high with clubs travelling from all over the UK and Europe.

Border City ABC coach Chris Stott said: “We’re quite confident when we put our boxers in competitions, they’re all doing well.

“To pick up five gold medals and two silvers was a great achievement for the club - we are over the moon.”

The Shaddongate-based club, which started just four years ago, has 36 registered boxers, aged from nine to 35. And four of their new coaches have just passed their Level One England Boxing coaching course.

“We’re all volunteers at the club,” added Stott.

“Boxing is becoming very popular across the city and most of the boxers are in the gym four times a week. They are very dedicated lads.”

Upon entering the MTK Box Cup, the boxers were placed in categories by age and weight, and then put into a random draw on Friday in the quarter-finals, with the winner moving on to box on the Saturday in the semi-finals.

Saturday’s winners progressed to Sunday’s finals.

Border City’s Tom Greenwood boxed well on Friday in the quarter-finals but lost on a close split-decision in his semi-final on Saturday.

Kyle Lomas was drawn against a difficult opponent on Friday and went out of the competition.

Rogan Marshall was also unlucky to go out of the competition on Friday after a hard-fought bout that would have made a great final.

Matty Howe and Johnjoe Carrigan both had trained hard for weeks in the hope that there would possibly be a weight category opened up for them - unfortunately it was not to be.

All the club’s boxers represented themselves and club superbly.

The event was well-organised with 600 entrants and nearly a 1,000 spectators.

Everyone is now back in the gym getting ready for this weekend where the club will be represented in Chester and Cleator Moor, on Friday, and then up in Scotland on Saturday evening.

Border City ABC’s next show is on Friday, May 17, at the Crown & Mitre Hotel in Carlisle city centre.

A limited number of tickets are still available.

Anyone interested in joining is invited to contact the club through their Facebook page or just drop in and have a look at what the club has to offer.
