Lewis Hand ended a run of seven successive losses as he got the better of Doon Valley Fitness Gym’s Louis Gow.

Having joined Wigton ABC from Carlisle Villa recently, Hand faced Gow in what was billed as an international contest between the respective fighters from England and Scotland which went down a treat with the Scottish supporters.

Gow came out strongly in the first-half of the first round on Saturday evening, boxing well behind his jab. But the taller Hand stayed calm and just picked away to claim a close first round.

After some minor instruction in between rounds, Hand dominated the second round, wearing down Gow to the point where the referee was keeping a close eye on him and was ready to step in. Gow, though, was resolute and got through to the end of the round.

The third round saw more of the same from Hand as he used his footwork to dictate the pace of the bout.

Hand took the centre of the ring, dominating the final round on the front foot to push Gow on to the ropes.

And by the end, there was only one winner with Hand deemed the victor by a unanimous decision from the Scottish judges.

Wigton founder and coach Andi Crossman said: “I feel we have hit a turning point now with Lewis.

“He is a pleasure to coach, he listens to every piece of advice I give him and tries to put it into practice straight away, working on pointers until he has perfected them.

"He used techniques we have worked on in the gym on Saturday and it paid off. He has also fitted right in with the squad as if he was there from day one.

“We are seeing a different Lewis Hand now, leaving that losing streak in the past and looking forward to a winning future.”

This Sunday, meanwhile, Wigton will be back in action with Haydon Newall representing the club in the regional minors championships which will take place in Manchester.

Crossman added: “Haydon is unbeaten in his first two contests and he definitely has the talent to go far in the competition.

"He will be boxing a lad from Coastal ABC in Morecambe.”

The club’s next home show will be on May 18 at the Greenhill Hotel. Call Crossman on 078343 71872 for tickets and more details.
