Rising Border City ABC fighter Jack Turnbull is set to take his promising boxing career into Europe after becoming a national champion.

Teenager Turnbull, who beat Scarborough ABC’s Reece Harris-Mann in the 75-80kg category in the England Boxing Junior National Final on Sunday, will go on to represent England at the GB Schools Three Nations in Cardiff, Wales, in early May.

The three-time North West champion has also been invited to compete in the EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships, which will be held in Romania, in late May.

Last year, Turnbull reached the national final but then lost to Repton’s Joe Cooper. Competing in Rotherham, 15-year-old Turnbull made no mistake this time, though, as he won by a unanimous decision against Yorkshire champion Harris-Mann.

Ian Archibald, one of the coaches at the club, said: “He won every round, and he boxed beautifully. It was a long day, but it was all worth it, it was brilliant.”

Turnbull is Border City’s third national champion, with both Brodie Stephenson and James Rowland having won titles in 2016 for the Carlisle club which only opened its door a year earlier.

Archibald said: “This is our fourth season and we are heading into the right direction.

“This is massive for Jack because it will open the door for bigger things for him, and maybe will help him to get some kind of sponsorship.

“It’s all good news for Jack and Border City Amateur Boxing Club at the moment.”

There were a whole host of Cumbrian boxing fans who flocked to the Magna Science Adventure Centre, too, to help get behind Turnbull.

“We had a few down to support him,” Archibald said.

“It was a really busy day, it was sold-out and packed out, but you could hear all the Carlisle lads supporting him.”

This Saturday, Turnbull is set to travel to Birmingham to take part in an England boxing training and selection camp.
