Border City ABC will host the first of three home shows next month when they face an England Select squad.

At Richard Rose Morton Academy on February 9, the Carlisle club will have the first of the trio of shows, before another event at the Crown and Mitre Hotel, exactly one month later. That will be followed by a third show in May.

Coach Ian Archibald says Border City will be looking to have a 17-bout card at next month’s show as the boxing action restarts after a break over the festive period.

Jack Turnbull will feature, having returned from an injury lay-off, while Jordan Ryan is another of Border City’s boxers likely to be involved.

He said: “We have our first bout of the year today, at Grange. We then have four lads on shows the week after that.

“So, things are picking up.”

“We have gone for a different venue for the show in February,” Archibald explained.

“We’ve had them at Carlisle Racecourse and the Crown and Mitre Hotel, but we’ve decided to slip another one in. This one will be at Richard Rose.

“It will be a sports hall sort of event. We have kept it cheap.

"We are hoping to get a few kids and families through the door, there will be no alcohol, it will just be an afternoon of boxing.”

And with tickets costing £12 for adults and £6 for Under-16s, Archibald hopes that will help to attract another good crowd.

He said: “We want families and kids to feel like they can come along, too. But we want anyone who is in the area of Carlisle to come along and support the local lads, really.

"It’s cheap as chips, really, £12 for an afternoon of boxing.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Border City welcomed Tommy Fury - younger brother of Tyson - to the club.

Archibald said: “He was good. He met the kids and spoke to them.

"He took some of them on the pads in the ring and spent quite a while with them. He’s not as high-profile as his brother, but it would have made his day because all the kids were queuing up to get his signature.

"I think he’s only had one professional fight, and a few amateur ones, but it was nice of him to come up. It could maybe open the door for Tyson coming up one day, you just don’t know.”
