A touring team from South Africa are set to head to Carlisle Squash Club.

This Sunday, the quartet of Adam Goad, Ben Hetherington, Simon Gray and James Wilkinson will represent the Warwick Road outfit as they play against the South African Knights, with the action starting at 4.30pm.

"The Knights are a group of university lads from South Africa," Dave Box, one of Carlisle’s coaches, said.

"They come every other year, and have spent two years trying to raise the funds to do this tour. They travel the full length of the country.

"They fly into London, travel as far north as Edinburgh, and then they come back down, playing as many clubs as they can.

"For about 30 days, they are playing about every day. They play to a high standard, so it will be something well worth watching."

Goad and Carlisle team-mate Joe Broadley also recently competed at the Scottish Junior Open. They played five games apiece, with Broadley having to come through qualifiers to reach the main event.

Both won three of their matches in Edinburgh, from December 28-30, with Goad finishing fourth overall in the Under-17 category, losing to Haris Qasim, from Pakistan, in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, over the Christmas period, Carlisle also welcomed Longtown badminton ace Lauren Smith who used the facilities at the club to maintain her fitness.
