Workington Reds could be set to face Weymouth in the FA Trophy second round.

Provided they get through tonight’s replay at Ramsbottom United (7.45pm kick-off), they will host the Terras on January 12.

The winners of the replay will pick up £6,000 and have the opportunity to go for a prize of £7,000 for winning the second-round tie, with Reds and Ramsbottom the first names out of the bag for the second-round draw.

Weymouth are in Reds’ equivalent Evo-Stik Premier Division in the south but are having a better time of it, lying second.

But they have reached the second round by default as their first-round opponents Needham Market withdrew from the competition.

Saturday’s tie at Weymouth was postponed because the pitch was unplayable and re-arranged for tonight. But with the distance involved to travel in midweek - leaving Norfolk at 11am and getting back at 5.30am on Wednesday morning - Needham Market reluctantly decided to withdraw from the competition.

A spokesman said: "Our players and staff had to take a half day’s leave from their employment on Friday to travel down to Weymouth for a game which was postponed.

"For us to request that our players and staff take a further one and a half or two days leave on Tuesday and Wednesday in the week preceding Christmas is considered unfair on them and their employers."

Of course, Reds need to account for Ramsbottom before they can think of hosting Weymouth.

Joint manager Lee Andrews said: "We were pleased with how the team battled the elements in the second half to get this chance of a replay.

"It really was tough out there. Hopefully, the weather will be a lot better tonight and we will get a chance to play some football."

Reds expect to have Jamie Mellen back in the squad after illness.
