Carlisle United captain Danny Grainger's winning goal in the Blues' 3-2 success over Newport County has been nominated for the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month award for November.

With the sides level at 2-2 after Newport's Padraig Amond and Dan Butler had cancelled out United playmaker Jamie Devitt's quickfire early brace, Cumbrian Grainger's late thunderbolt won the day for Carlisle at Brunton Park.

Describing Grainger's goal, the panel said: "A captain’s way to claim three points for his side.

"Grainger had no right to be so far forward in injury-time, but he adjusted his feet adroitly to lash home a finely-judged angled winner."

Also up for the League Two award alongside Grainger are George Maris for his effort in Cambridge's 3-1 loss at Oldham, as well as Sammie Szmodics for his goal in Colchester in their 1-1 draw with Exeter.

The winners of the Sky Bet EFL Goals of the Month are chosen by a fan poll on skysports.com.

Voting opened at 6am this morning, with voting closing on Monday and the winner announced next Friday.

Speaking about the goal, Grainger said: "It was nice to see it fly in, although the three points was the main thing that day, after the run we’d been on.

"To get nominated for this is personally fantastic.

"It was the dying stages, and 99 times they fly into the Warwick [Road End], so it was nice to see it go into the top corner and I was over the moon.

"It’s nice to have a bit of recognition. It will be up there in my top two or three – although the Pompey one [in November 2015] will still rank as number one with my swinger right foot!"
