Carlisle United 1 (4) Stoke City's Under-21s 1 (5): The second lowest Carlisle United home crowd in history of 882 saw the Blues exit the Checkatrade Trophy after a 1-1 draw against Stoke’s Under-21s.

United had to win to progress and took the lead through Jack Sowerby but Stoke equalised through Tyrese Campbell’s header before the visitors won on penalties in farcical fashion.

The young Potters started well but the best chance either side could muster in the first 15 minutes saw Thibaud Verlinden's effort deflect into the side-netting.

United responded immediately as goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai pushed away a Hallam Hope header after Sowerby’s right-wing cross.

But Carlisle did take the lead with 23 minutes played and in some style, too, as Sowerby found the top corner from 25 yards out.

John Sheridan's men then had another couple of chances to double their lead through Hallam Hope but the Barbados international was off target on both occasions.

And Stoke levelled on 34 minutes through a bullet header from Campbell.

Sowerby came close to giving United the lead again three minutes before half-time but his shot deflected off keeper Gyollai and on to the crossbar.

After a slow start after the restart, Gyollai pushed away Ashley Nadesan's header with 64 minutes played.

Nine minutes later, the Fleetwood loan man hit the post after Jerry Yates' cutback from the right.

Stoke then had a glorious chance when Cumbrians keeper Adam Collin did just enough to thwart Harry Souttar after his header from a free-kick.

In the final minute of normal time, sub Mike Jones flashed inches wide with a long-range effort as Carlisle exited the competition and then lost a meaningless shoot-out.

Boss Sheridan made four changes for Carlisle United's Checkatrade Trophy tie against Stoke City's Under-21s.

Right-back Gary Miller replaced Anthony Gerrard, while Nadesan, who was denied permission to play in Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup victory at Crewe by parent club Fleetwood, returned to the starting line-up.

Jamie Devitt was not involved in the squad at all while Jones dropped to the bench, with the pair replaced by Sowerby and George Glendon.

Former Hull man Sam Clucas started for the young Potters side which is captained by Oliver Shenton.
