Cumbria can only sit and wait for the final game of the BARLA County Championship Tri-Series.

Having completed their two-match programme, Cumbria lie joint top, but second on points differential in both the Open Age and Under-19s competitions.

On Saturday, both age-group games were played at Millom against Lancashire, with a win and defeat as in the previous week against Yorkshire. But they were the wrong way round as far as Cumbria were concerned, which denied them the opportunity to claim the Under-19s title.

After their hard-earned 20-18 win against the Tykes, Cumbria lost 32-22 to a good Lancashire side who will be strong favourites to beat Yorkshire at Leigh Miners Rangers.

Indeed, the scoreline might have been greater but for two converted tries for the hosts in the closing stages.

The finale of the Open Age Championship is expected to be a bit tighter. Indeed, a win for Lancashire by two points would see the title shared by all three.

Cumbria beat Lancashire 16-14 after they had lost 14-12 in Yorkshire.

Oldham St Anne’s stand-off Matthew Whitehead had the chance to square it late in the game but, from 20 metres, pulled a penalty wide.

Cumbria had been forced back, and had to show great resolve in defence to hold-out and claim the victory as they had taken the lead with 17 minutes left.
