Jamie Devitt hopes his lucky matchwinner for Carlisle United at Crewe is a sign that the Blues’ fortunes are turning.

The midfielder’s bizarre 90th-minute goal means all eyes are on the FA Cup second round draw tonight, where United are ball number 37.

Brighton’s west Cumbrian former Carlisle striker Glenn Murray will determine his old club’s fate as he will conduct the draw alongside Mark Schwarzer.

It comes after John Sheridan’s side won their first round encounter at the Alexandra Stadium in unlikely style, as home keeper Ben Garratt’s clearance struck Devitt and rebounded into the net.

The scorer says Carlisle were overdue some good fortune.

“It’s probably that little bit of luck we haven’t really had,” Devitt said.

“It goes down as my goal – it doesn’t go down that it smacked off me and went in.

“They all count, that’s the main thing. Now we’ve got that bit of luck I hope it sets us off on a run.

“It’s two last-minute goals in two weeks now. We don’t want to leave it to the last minute but it sends the fans home happy and gives them some excitement.

“We’re in the next round and that’s all that matters.”

Devitt’s goal also banked United £36,000 prize money, while they are now one game away from the potentially lucrative third round.

The Irish schemer said their back-to-back victories, which followed a slide in form, came after some soul-searching among Sheridan’s squad.

“Sometimes when you win it can paper over things a bit, but when you lose you need to have a look at yourselves,” Devitt said.

“Everybody has done that, because we have been on a really bad run.

“Hopefully Danny [Grainger]’s goal against Newport gave us the little kick we needed and the urge to keep going.”

Grainger had a penalty saved by Garratt before the break, Devitt then triggering celebrations among the 542 travelling fans.

It also saw some scuffles break out between rival players, resulting in a booking for United’s Anthony Gerrard.

Devitt, though, said: “I didn’t even see what was going on – I just saw one of their lads lying on the floor.

“I was too busy celebrating anyway. I don’t get involved with any of that because, as you know, I’m only a skinny little man so I’d get thrown everywhere.”

He added: “I don’t know if we deserved to win, but we definitely didn’t deserve to lose, and we created the better chances in the game.”

On the prospect of a money-spinning cup run, Devitt added: “I don’t care who we get [in the second round] - we’d like someone at home but we just want to be in that third round and see what happens.

“The club has had Everton and Liverpool before in the cups and you don’t get better days than them.

“They are the ones you can sit down with your kids and grandkids and talk about.

“We’ll see what happens but we can’t even look at the next round until it comes around.”

Sheridan said Devitt and Gerrard will be assessed after taking knocks during the game.

Devitt added: “In the first half there was a bit of a late tackle which smacked my calf, and all game it was just like a dead leg.

“I know I won’t be able to walk in the morning but it will settle down. These things happen and you just get on with it.”

The draw is on BBC2 from 7pm.
