Workington Reds slipped to their first home defeat of the season after an excellent first half, but two goals in as many minutes turned the game Whitby Town's way after the break as they won 2-1.

In a lively first half, Workington went close when Matty Douglas had a header cleared off the line and Whitby keeper Adam McHugh turned a Conor Tinnion free-kick on to his own bar and over for a corner.

But Tinnion gave Reds the lead on 27 minutes, drilling a free-kick round the Whitby wall into the bottom corner.

It was an excellent first-half performance by the Reds, more in keeping with what the fans had been used to in previous seasons.

There were two close calls for the home side at the start of the second half when Aaran Taylor came out to block Junior Mondal as he broke clear, and then former Reds striker Matty Tymon hit a post.

Whitby had forced the pace from the off and equalised on 61 minutes when Andy Monkhouse fired in through a crowded area after a corner fell to him.

They took the lead a minute later when Lewis Maloney got away on the left and a low cross-shot went in off the post.

Jordan Holt almost levelled on 68 minutes but a fine header was acrobatically turned over by McHugh and Scott Allison had a goal-bound shot pushed round by the Whitby keeper.

Meanwhile, Reds have been drawn at home to Scarborough Athletic in the first round of the FA Trophy. The game will be played on Saturday, October 27 at Borough Park.
