A first half injury time goal leaves Prescot Cables with the advantage over Workington Reds at the break in tonight's Integro League Cup tie at Borough Park.

Reds began well with a youthful looking side, putting pressure on the visiting Prescot Cables from the outset.

Student Tom Fagan, from Southport but studying in Carlisle, began the game at right back, looking to impress the Reds bosses as he joined the club this week.

And it was another new face Kieran Maguire, who signed in the close season, that opened the scoring with a great effort from 30-yards out in just the seventh minute.

Both sides were having to contend with sweeping wind and rain across Borough Park and it nearly led to a second goal for Reds.

Lewis Casson, in goal for Reds, lofted the ball upfield, the wind took hold of it and the Prescot keeper was back-peddling to ensure it didn't land in his net.

Prescot came more into the game and a good cross saw Chris Almond rise to head home past Casson to equalise for the visitors.

Reds defence were tested by a determined Prescot side with Jordan Southworth putting the pressure on down the right hand side but Reds still looked dangerous on the attack.

Pushing forward, Max Brown hammered a shot that was heading for the goal until Cables keeper Kyle Haslam tipped it over the bar.

Both sides had their chances but it looked as though the half would end all squad but then into injury time, Prescot sub Matt Hamilton thundered a shot into the back of the net for the visitors to take the lead.
