Workington Town have moved swiftly to bolster their pack after it was confirmed in-form prop Stevie Scholey is out for up to six weeks.

Scholey broke his thumb in the opening minutes of last Sunday’s 30-26 defeat against Doncaster.

But Town head coach Dave Clark has dipped into the loan market to ensure his pack is strong for the trip to North Wales Crusaders this Sunday, kick-off 2.30pm.

Wigan Warriors forward Liam Byrne and Warrington Wolves’ Joe Ryan will both come into contention for the League One encounter.

Town head coach Dave Clark said: “It’s really unfortunate that Stevie Scholey suffered a bad injury to his thumb in the first few minutes of the Doncaster game.

“He’s a standout forward in the league and has been going really well in defence and attack.

“We needed to replace Stevie, who could be out for four to six weeks, and also to bolster the pack as we’ve been running a bit light since Kris Coward was injured.

“But Tom Curwen is also back in contention which is great as he was missed last Sunday.”

The two new boys come highly recommended by their parent clubs.

Byrne, 19, has representative honours with the English Lionhearts and is highly regarded as a strong-running prop-forward with great ball handling skills.

Ryan, 20, features regularly for Warrington Reserves and is highly regarded by coach Lee Briers who is certain that he will make a real impression in League One.

And an added bonus to the Town squad is that both winger Joe Hambley and prop Tom Curwen have been cleared to play this Sunday.

They missed last weekend’s last gasp loss at Derwent Park after failing concussion tests.

Town are looking to get league points on the board this weekend before they face a tough test with the visit of Toronto Wolfpack on June 18.
