Nathan Waterston, the Workington Reds striker, took centre stage for his cricketing exploits at the weekend.

After playing for Reds in their 1-1 draw at Hednesford in the Midlands, his father Darren drove him back to Barrow for the North Lancs/Cumbria presentation night.

In a remarkable season in the North Lancs and Cumbria League’s Premier Division, the Furness opener topped the batting averages.

Beating the league’s best professionals, his average was 58.71 and, overall in league and cup matches, he scored 1,006 runs at an average of 55.89.

He also won the league’s award for the best player under the age of 21.

It was almost a perfect day for Nathan as he was close to securing a win at Hednesford.

After Reds had been pegged back by a 90th-minute equaliser, he saw a header in the fourth and final minute of time added on turned on to the bar by keeper James Wren.

BBC Radio 5 live ’s Pat Murphy was the speaker at the event.

Meanwhile, league champions Workington have also held their own club presentations.

One annual award is in memory of Workington Town rugby league legend Ike Southward – a lover of cricket and keen supporter of Workington.

The award goes each season to the most promising youngster in the club and this year it went to Ben Scott.

Other awards went to: Kristian Moffat, first-team batting; Andrew Ireland, first-team bowling and Players’ player; Dave Pearce, second-team batting; Ben Scott, second-team bowling; Robson Scott, third-team batting, and third-team bowling.
